When the Grand Master had divined the intentions of the Ottomans he freed all the prisoners who were in chains and gave them arms, making them liberal promises of reward if they fight like good Christians and brave men, brigading them at the same time with the voluntary oarsmen. At that time all the slaves of the Order, as well as those who belonged to private individuals, more than a thousand in all, were kept in prison, and when they were taken out to work at the defences they were chained in pairs.
