Balbi Corregio's Diary - Monday 28th May - Slaying of all Dogs Inside Birgu and St. Michael

Monday, 28 May

All the dogs in the island had been collected in the Birgu and at St Michael and their continual baying during the night disconcerted the sentries. For this reason and also lest their owners should share their rations with them, the Grand Master ordered their destruction.

During this time the work of improving the defence was proceeding with diligence and alacrity, and, as the Port of Aragon was weak, our engineers built a parapet which extended to Bormla.
