Balbi di Correggio's Diary - 12th of June - A Janissari is captured

Tuesday, 12 June

At this time Bajada came from the City (Mdina) and said that the cavalry had captured a Janizary[1] and two labourers. This Bajada was a Maltese who had been a slave in the hands of the Turks and spoke their language fluently. He was a very good swimmer and did good service for the Order during the Siege.

[1] A Janizary (or Janissary) was an elite infantry soldier who was usually part of the Ottoman Sultan’s bodyguards and household troops. In the attack on Malta, an exceptionally large number of them were sent to ensure victory.
