Francisco Balbi di Corregio's Diary - 11th September

In their attack upon Malta, the Turks lost 35,000 men, including Dragut and many other persons of distinction. When they left Malta, 65,000 enemy cannon balls had already been collected in St Angelo and they were all of cast iron. This is how the Grand Master managed to collect such a large number in such a short time. He gave orders that no water should be given from the cisterns of St Angelo except to those who brought cannon balls. Many wanted water, so they picked up the balls whenever they could find them and took them to St Angelo. In this way more cannon balls were brought in than if 3,000 labourers had been employed.
