After mid-day, the enemy, smarting under the heavy losses sustained, commenced bombarding St Elmo with great fury. Up to now, they had been engaged in recovering the dead: and on our side, we were busy burning ours and sending the wounded to the infirmary (Birgu) where there were already over two hundred.
This same night the Grand Master sent one hundred to fifty men to St Elmo with munitions and a great number of baskets, mattresses, and unravelled rope to serve in place of fascines in putting up defences.
Meanwhile, no time was being lost in the Birgu in improving all the defences.
