In this week’s blog Yana Camilleri the alto in the City of Humanity Vocal Ensemble talks about her experience in the premier of the first opera.

My experience as part of Belt il-Bniedem Swar 1 Ensemble

When I was approached by Dr. Reuben Pace to sit for an audition to be part of an ensemble of professional singers I was delighted. I felt elated to be accepted as one of the singers taking part in this unique opera. The production was going to be delivered in the Maltese language for the first time and this was the main element that captured my interest.

As a mezzo-soprano with experience in several productions and operas, I must say that this experience instilled great pride. “Belt il-Bniedem 1 Swar” focused on a specific episode that is intrinsically linked to Malta’s heritage, moreover the opera was performed in our national language. In my opinion, the opera successfully amalgamated the classical with the contemporary. This is especially true with regards the complex use of the old form of the Maltese language that was intertwined with a contemporary composition.

This performance was truly a challenge both from a musical perspective and linguistically. With the help and guidance of several mentors including also endless hours of study and rehearsals, I can proudly say that I managed to master this artistic piece of work musically and artistically on stage. Obviously, this would not have been possible without the support of the rest of the professional singers forming part of this ensemble. The opera was technically difficult and required perseverance together with a great amount of effort from the singer to ultimately deliver a finished piece of art to the audience.

I also have to give credit to all the hardworking, professional people including also the stage director and his assistants who constantly gave us directions to ultimately guide us in achieving such a high standard. It was a learning experience from beginning till end. It is thanks to such a great team effort that the opera was a success.

In the end, the production was truly a showcase of impeccable talent, something which makes me proud to be Maltese.

In the next blog, Charlene Portelli one of the sopranos in the City of Humanity vocal ensemble will talk about her experience in the premier of the first opera.
